How we feel on the inside is critical for our quality of life, how we present ourselves and our day to day mood, not to mention for making sure that stress doesn’t take its toll on our skin.There are small things you can do daily or weekly to help you achieve a sense of inner calm that helps you be one with yourself and feel content. CALM THE SENSES
You need to cater to all your senses in order to feel completely at peace. Start with the environment you’re in. Make sure everything is neat, tidy and clean and always declutter your home throughout the year. In terms of scent, lavender and cedarwood are great smells to keep in the home to induce a sense of calm. Keep your house to a temperature that makes you happy, but fresh air is always lovely. There are certain images and things that trigger people to immediately feel calm for example ; fresh flowers, images of family, classical music, water running or even a certain TV show. Find what works for you as it’s so personal.
Breathing is a very powerful thing for the body and mind and can do wonders for anxiety and stress. Get comfortable and take 4 deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth. It will immediately calm you down. Do this whenever you feel uneasy or anxious and it will become a habit. There are plenty of apps and YouTube videos that give guided meditation if you’re struggling to do it alone.
In this day and age, it’s easy to get caught up in negativity. If this affects you it’s very simple to remove it, doing so will bring about a great sense of relief. Going through your social media accounts and unfollowing anything that promotes any negative content, it’s a very simple thing to do yet it makes the world of difference. Also, if you are someone who gets easily affected by the news, it may be best to limit the number of things you read about.
Going outside and relaxing around nature can really soothe the mind and put things into perspective. It allows you to feel calm and happy without being surrounded by materialistic items. Going to a park or beach on a nice day and closing your eyes for a second can really calm down your mind. Taking your shoes off and walking on the grass earth or sand and actually being “grounded” has a profound effect on your psyche and well-being.
