Eating out is great fun and a lovely way to try new food and socialize with friends or family. It can be difficult when you enjoy eating healthy or follow a plant-based lifestyle.Luckily, these days, healthy food is a lot more accessible and there are a lot of health-consciouseateries around as well. We’ve rounded up some things to avoid and tips on choosing better options whilst dining out.
Most of the time you’ll know where you’re going beforehand and most restaurants have menus online. Larger, chain restaurants are more likely to cater to variations in diet but it’s always worth looking at the menu first. If you get a choice in where you eat, opt for a place which sources organic local food or even an exclusively veggie place.
THINGS TO AVOID
There are a few keywords you should avoid in dishes to make sure you’re getting the best nutrients available and not just eating saturated fats and chemicals. The word fried or battered often indicate lots of fats that aren’t good for the heart. Instead look for grilled and baked proteins. Always avoid over loading on sugary sauces on your dishes as well. Going for the vegetarian option normally means you’re getting a lot more vegetables and healthy grains into your meal, instead of meat which can be high in saturates, just be sure to avoid dishes smothered in cheese which is equally high in unhealthy fats.
If you’re going for something carb heavy like a pasta or risotto, ask for a half portion and load up with veggies or salad for the other half. Always ask for a wholemeal or whole grain options. Don’t be afraid to pick different components of different meals. Want the grilled tofu from one meal and the quinoa salad of the other? Then just ask!
DRINKS AND DESSERTS
It can be easy to get a healthy meal full of goodness but then fail at ordering drinks or when after dinner comes. For drinks, a soda water with freshly squeezed lemon is refreshing and has a lovely flavour. If you opt for alcohol, go for a zero sulphate organic wine or a single shot of a white spirit with soda. Instead of a sugar filled dessert, opt for a peppermint tea to satisfy cravings and help digestion after a meal.
