Face Mapping – What is your skin telling you?
We’re often left confused by a sudden outbreak of spots concentrated in one area of the face. Is it hormone-related? Is my diet lacking something?
Introducing truly holistic approach to uncovering what’s really going on with our skin – the ancient art of face mapping can help us identify the cause of blemishes or skin concerns by splitting the face into several sections such as the forehead, chin and nose. Understanding these different ‘zones’ can help us to make the necessary adjustments to our diet and lifestyle.
Here we will break it down for you focussing on the face and neck by area, concern and nutritional tips for achieving the healthiest skin possible.
You are likely to have heard before about the T- zone as far as facial zones are concerned this is the most talked about facial zone as it is the area, which can often suffer from an overproduction of oil. With face mapping the T- zone is actually broken down into 5 sections.
Z O N E 1: T – Z O N E , F O R E H E A D
As the T-zone’s largest region, the forehead can expose many of the most common facial imperfections. Oil and dirt build-up can lead to breakouts, while smiling, squinting, and other expressions gradually form wrinkles and creases.
T H E D I G E S T I V E S Y S T E M
Chocolate and spots are a synonymous combination but, in general, high amounts of fat within your diet can lead you to breakout across your forehead. Cleanse your diet with whole foods, antioxidant-rich green tea and up your water intake to clear this area.
Z O N E 2: T – Z O N E , B R I D G E
The area directly in-between the eyebrows is notorious for breakouts and the formation of the dreaded “11’s”. These lines range in severity from fine to deep, and are the result of facial expressions, such as squinting. Left untreated, they can deepen and intensify over time.
T H E L I V E R
This is the zone where food allergies tend to show up first, so take a look at your ingredients. Over consumption of alcohol, greasy food, dairy are said to be the main culprits for spots in this area. 30 minutes of light exercise every day is helpful plus adequate sleep to give your liver a well deserved rest and drinking at least 1 litre of water daily will keep your liver well flushed, free of toxins and hydrated.
Z O N E 3 A N D 4: T – Z O N E , E Y E S
The area around the eyes is among the most delicate within the T-zone. This area dehydrates easily, which can result in wrinkles, age lines, and crows feet. Over time, neglecting the needs of this area can further lead to sagging, redness, and a tired, puffy appearance.
T H E K I D N E Y S
Spots close to your ear and even dark circles around the eyes can be caused by dehydration. Again make sure you keep well hydrated throughout the day and avoid aerated drinks, coffee, tea, alcohol and salt whenever possible as these will cause further dehydration.
Z O N E 5: T – Z O N E , N O S E
Oil and clogged pores occur routinely within this T-zone trouble spot. Years of rubbing and blowing one’s nose can cause the capillaries that line the sides of nasal folds to break. Pore size is established on the nose and measured outwards to determine skin type.
T H E H E A R T
This area is skin is full of dilated pores so make sure your make-up brushes and anything that you bring close to your face are kept clean. Try to reduce high blood pressure for an internal solution to clearing spots in this area. Replace ‘bad’ fats with more fruits, vegetables, nuts and Omega-rich fish and consult your doctor if you have any further heart-related concerns.
Z O N E 6 A N D 7: C H E E K S
The cheeks are an equally large region of the face, and therefore vulnerable to a host of imperfections. Acne and oil build-up are common, and serve as telltale signs of hormonal flux. If not properly treated, irritation, pore variation, and broken capillaries can occur more frequently.
T H E R E S P I R A T O R Y S Y S T E M
If you’re a smoker you may find that you are more prone to acne along the tops of your cheeks. However, like most people, increasing your exposure to fresh air with long and regular walks can do wonders for your complexion.
Z O N E 8: T – Z O N E , C H I N
Clogged pores and breakouts are highly visible near the chin, and may be amplified when certain cosmetics are used regularly. Smokers are especially vulnerable to Zone 8 challenges, as this commonly results in the contraction of blood vessels. Restricted circulation can leave the chin dull, lifeless and prone to accelerated aging.
H O R M O N E S A N D T H E S T O M A C H
This zone is a key indicator of stress and hormonal imbalances particularly around a certain time of the month. Whilst the latter cannot be avoided eating clean with plenty of exercise will help you to keep a clear complexion. If you’ve been eating a lot of rich and heavy foods then consider a detox or adding more fibre to your diet. Intermittent fasting where you only drink fluids for a 24 hr period (not done more than once a week) ie herbal teas, broths, juices can have a profound impact on your skin and health.
Z O N E 9: N E C K A N D C O L L A R
The neck is one of the most inadvertently neglected areas. Despite this, the neck has needs that are in line with other regions of the face. When not properly cared for, the skin of the neck can sag and wrinkle over time.
